The Forest Germans in the Carpathian History and Culture

The history of the Forest Germans (in German Walddeutsche, and in Polish Głuchoniemcy) dates back to the 14th century. From the Middle Ages, the west colonialists integrated with the Polish population. The community created in this way was called the Forest Germans since the 17th century and in the 20th century it became a victim of the Polish-German conflict. The forgotten-for-decades Atlantis of the Forest Germans has returned. The first volume of the monograph Głuchoniemcy w historii i kulturze Karpat (Eng. The Forest Germans in the Carpathian History and Culture) presents their history since the 14th century, the biography of the ethnonym and choronym, location, borders, and geographical characteristics of the community of the Forest Germans and the German traces in their toponymy. The second volume analyses the identity, language, anthroponymy, as well as material and nonmaterial cultural heritage of the Forest Germans. It is the first work to explore the topic of the Forest Germans in its full complexity.

Keywords: Forest Germans, Polish ethnic groups, borderland, the Carpathians, Lesser Poland, Red Ruthenia, melting pot
