The Combustion Synthesis of Nanomaterials
Nanostructured materials are the basis of nanotechnology – the scientific and technological "hit" of the 21st century. This is a field of research which has already made its way into our everyday lives with nearly a thousand products available on the market. We are able to produce nanomaterials by many methods, but there is a continual search for new technologies that will be more effective than those currently in use. This book presents combustion synthesis, an autogenic and exothermic process of the redox type allowing many compounds to be obtained, above all in the areas of so-called special and composite ceramics. These include carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides and cermets, the production of which using high-temperature conventional processes is much more time-consuming and energy-intensive.
The Combustion Synthesis of Nanomaterials is the first Polish monograph in this field, hence its largely basic and, in places, almost popular science character. It provides an introduction to combustion synthesis reactions and their products, but also describes processes which have been used for decades, such as aluminothermic reactions or the Acheson method of silicon carbide production. As a result the circle of potential readers of this book is wide, ranging from university and polytechnic undergraduates and doctoral students of disciplines associated with the physical chemistry of solids, to the academic and research staff of universities and scientific institutes. The various chapters of the book are supplemented by a rich bibliography containing almost 1500 references which will be of assistance in locating detailed source information useful to specialists in this and related fields.
