Prezentacja programu badań czerpie z encyklopedii win specjalnych: Madeira, Port, Sherry: The Equinox Companion to Fortified Wines (2021) oraz Sparkling Wines: The Equinox Guide for Wine Professionals and Connoisseurs (2026), które są tutaj traktowane jako modele wiedzy.

Exploring tenets of scientific research, current and past, the book rethinks and rewrites the programme of terminological studies on professional communication in industrial areas monitored by life and technical sciences in general and by wine science in particular. The worth of the proposed research programme lies in its focus on theory building by means of testing hypotheses using terminological models of (encyclopaedic) knowledge.

Its value is demonstrated by presenting all stages of multilateral research on communication in the wine trade. The research programme offered in this book draws heavily on two encyclopaedias on special wines, namely Madeira, Port, Sherry: The Equinox Companion to Fortified Wines (2021) and Sparkling Wines: The Equinox Guide for Wine Professionals and Connoisseurs (2026). Considered as knowledge models and analysed for their content, these reference works have enabled empirical testing of research propositions, providing theoretical insights on professional communication, notably regarding the understanding of concepts and the use of loanwords and eponyms in discourse, the latter viewed as unique testimonies to various stages of a trade’s history.

Keywords: wine trade, professional communication, knowledge modelling, multilingual terminology, loanwords.

The author develops a structured and explicit research programme based on hypothesis formulation, corpus analysis, and knowledge modelling. The emphasis on models as tools for testing hypotheses and building theory is particularly convincing and innovative.
Professor Laurent Gautier, Université Bourgogne Europe, France

What distinguishes the work from other publications is first and foremost its focus upon the oenological field, understood here as a life science, but one with rich cultural aspects, which makes it relevant to adopt a broad concept of terminology, including not only the conceptual elements allowing the modelling of conceptual relations of different kind, but also the inclusion of encyclopaedic information.
Professor Jan Engberg, Aarhus University, Denmark

Piotr Nagórka, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. As Head of the Laboratory of Cultural Terminology at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics, he directs and conducts research in multilingual terminology while offering terminological assistance to various domains of knowledge, including wine and food science and studies on human values. He has authored dictionaries dedicated to the field of oenology and numerous articles on Europeans’ ethical concepts. His encyclopaedia Madeira, Port, Sherry: The Equinox Companion to Fortified Wines has gained attention from linguists and wine professionals, having been recognised by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, winning the prestigious Prix de l’OIV award in 2022. He has received research fellowship awards from the University of Vienna and Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz. The outcomes of his research have been published as journal articles and book chapters, and presented at international conferences in France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom.
