The Games and Bread: Traditionalist Populism in a Comparative Perspective
The book is devoted to populism, probably the most important socio-political and cultural phenomenon, which recently has been developing dynamically in Europe and many other parts of the world. The author focuses on its specific version, which he calls traditionalist populism and which has been especially characteristic of the ruling forces in Hungary, Poland, and several other countries in Central and Eastern Europe over the last fifteen years.
Regardless of different local conditions, populist policy pursued by the authorities in Turkey, India, Israel, Brasil and the USA had similar features, which is especially well-illustrated by Donald Trump’s second presidential term. In the subsequent four chapters the author presents portraits of the leading leaders of this trend, explains properties peculiar to it, highlights the key role played in it by affective politics (i.e. based on emotions), and finally discusses two main pillars of populist governance conventionally called here the “Games” and “Bread”.
The main advantage of the monograph is an extensive comparative and multi-disciplinary approach, which combines traditional politology with the psychological, sociological and cultural perspective. According to the reviewers, the book “with its numerous advantages is an important compendium of knowledge about populism” (Professor A. Zybała), and “by far the most in-depth study of this case available in Polish subject literature” (Professor B. Góralczyk).
Keywords: populism, traditionalism, nationalism, social policy, Europe.
