Sound Sentiment. An Essay on the Musical Emotions, including the complete text of "The Corded Shell"
The first Polish translation of Peter Kivy’s The Sound Sentiment (1989), a classic of the 20th century musical aesthetics, which contains the original version of The Corded Shell (1980) and additional chapters written in response to the debate concerning emotionalism. The author explores music expression and the problems related to its understanding, with reference to philosophy, history of music and musicology. Kivy advocates music cognitivism, which involves recognizing emotions in music without arousing emotions in the audience and without attributing emotions to the composer.
Keywords: Peter Kivy, aesthetics, philosophy of music, expression, emotionalism.
