The monograph, divided into three major sections, discusses such themes as the transformations of urban spaces, dilemmas of economic globalisation, and social challenges of the modern age. The authors analyse the most relevant issues associated with regional and urban processes in Poland and non-European countries: the sustainable development model of cities and regions, eco-development, social and economic inequality between regions and within urbanised areas, the objectives and strategies of regional and urban planning.

This book contains 15 papers by renowned academic researchers from European and Latin American universities, presenting their experiences in the state of the art of urban environmental issues which in some way affect the good living of city inhabitants. I can only recommend that it be read in universities and higher education schools, because these experiences will help identify the successes and failures of the sustainable development strategies that we have been applying in each of our countries.

The strength of the monograph lies in its international approach and wide array of research perspectives, which enrich the narrative and imbue it with a global character. The individual chapters display high academic quality and discuss key dilemmas of the modern world – from the protection of urban heritage and the importance of water for the economy down to the challenges of circular economy or the issues of spatial segregation. The publication is a significant contribution to the debate on the future of sustainable development and to the body of scholarly works on this very subject, as well as to the practical aspect of sustainable development. It offers a valuable source of inspiration for researchers, practicians, and decision makers.
