The Art of Compromise. The First Free Election and the Warsaw Confederation
The publication presents the course of the first free election in the Republic of Poland, which took place after Sigismund II Augustus’ death in 1572. It describes political processes during the interregnum, concentrating on the negotiations between nobility factions and candidates for the throne. Particular attention was paid to the Warsaw Confederation – its importance for shaping the principle of religious tolerance and the role it played in concluding the compromise, despite deep religious differences. The concluded agreement created the conditions for the election of Henry Valois as king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Keywords: election, reformation, Sigismund II Augustus, modern era, Henry Valois.
