Reflections on the Novel: From Madam Lafayette to Marquis de Sade
The publication is a tribute on the 50th anniversary of the death of Jean Fabre – an eminent professor at the post-war Sorbonne and pre-war deputy director of the French Institute in Warsaw. A collection of studies on the 17th and 18th century French novel was originally published at the initiative of Fabre's students on the third anniversary of his death and has not yet been published in Polish. The current edition, prepared by the leading Polish specialists in the 17th and 18th century French novel, is preceded by the memories of the Professor's relatives, friends and students and provided with footnotes intended for Polish readers. The book shows the originality of the thought of the scientist strongly associated with the Polish scientific community and is an important point of reference in research on European literary culture of the modern era.
Keywords: French novel, the Enlightenment, courtly culture, narrator's transformations, philosophical foundations of the novel.
