The Poles, the Jews and the Myth of Women Trafficking
The author looks at the issue of women trafficking at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. She considers how to explain the widespread interest in the practice compared with very few cases of the trafficking confirmed by historical sources. The author also puts a question if laying responsibility for the practice on the partitioning powers and the Jews was reflected in reality. In her research, the author used methodologies assuming the existence of moral panic and the myth of women trafficking.
Keywords: prostitution, women trafficking, emigration, crime, the Jews.
The Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University hosted a conversation with Aleksandra Jakubczak in conversation with Rebecca Kobrin, and Małgorzata Mazurek. >>>

This comprehensive account of the battle against the international sex trade in Polish territory during the late-19th and early-20th centuries offers a number of different prisms for considering how the anti-trafficking movement was organized and the themes it employed to raise awareness of the transport of young women abroad to work in foreign brothels. It is the first study to consider in such detail both Jewish and Christian anti-trafficking organizations and to examine the relationship between the goals and strategies of both groups.
