The Art and Emancipation of Women in Socialist Poland. The Case of Maria Pinińska-Bereś
The author analyses female experience, present in Maria Pinińska-Bereś’ works, as connected with the processes taking place in socialist Poland: the development of sex knowledge and counselling, the strong influence of Catholic Church, counter-culture groups, socialist consumerism, the changing erotic iconosphere and the ideas of the second wave of feminism coming from the other side of the Iron Curtain. The analysis of the relationship between them and the works of the artist allows us to perceive and understand the local context of her feminist works and the elements which favoured and hindered their development.
Keywords: Maria Pinińska-Bereś, art, emancipation, feminism, Polish People’s Republic.
