This edition of selected letters to and from Boris Pasternak, translated into Polish by Seweryn Pollak (from typescripts kept at the University of Warsaw Library) complements the volume of essays (Szkice) previously published by the University of Warsaw Press, and completes the project, initiated back in the 1970s, of rescuing for the reading public a piece of literary history. Pollak’s idea was for the letters and the essays to combine to form a biography of Pasternak. Carefully edited, with an exhaustive commentary, the poet’s correspondence offers an insight into his complex system of views and values.
