Rachunki [Reckonings] were four volumes of reflexions issued yearly between 1866 and 1869 by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski under the penname B. Bolesławita. They were an ambitious attempt at tackling the bitterness following the failed insurrection of 1863–1864, redefining what constituted Polishness and what path forward the nation should take vis-a-vis the challenges of 19th century modernisation. The present volume offers selected excerpts from Rachunki grouped into prefaced thematic sections, devoted to: Poland and Polishness, literature, theatre, national and European fairs, higher education, Galicia, Lithuania, and Siberia.
