Topographies of Marvels: A Bestseller Rome Travel Guide from 1575 in the Hands of Authors, Publishers and Readers
The author presents one of the most frequently reissued Rome travel guides of the second half of the 16th century: from the development of its concept, through the publishing process of the fifteen editions from 1575, to the ways in which individual copies were used by readers in different places, times and circumstances. She reveals mechanisms for disseminating cheap applied literature and presents the results of provenance research based on a detailed analysis of reading traces and ownership marks preserved in selected copies of the guide. She explores a single work, but places it in a broader context, which is a starting point for in-depth reflection on the production, circulation and reception of utility books in modern Europe.
Keywords: Rome travel guide, Jubilee Year, provenance research, old prints, Mirabilia Romae, Mirabilia Urbis Romae.
