This monographic volume discusses complex issues of residential ancient architecture, in terms of planimetry and decoration, as well as social relations and context. The volume comprises 11 articles contributed by authors from the Polish academic milieu, as well as contributors from Italy, Cyprus and Switzerland. It presents the results of new investigations and discuss various aspects of architecture and different types of housing - from lavish residences in provincial capitals to modest houses in villages. The authors describe the role and socio-aesthetic importance of houses décor, with particular emphasis on architectural decoration.
The studies cover a wide geographic area stretching from Magna Graecia, through Cyrenaica and northern Egypt to Cyprus and the coast of Levant, in a wide time spectrum, from the Republican period to Late Antiquity. The structure and content of the entire volume reflect the diverse research methodologies and approaches used by the authors of the presented papers - some of them analyzed global phenomena in the post-Hellenistic world, while others dedicated themselves to meticulous studies on specific archaeological evidence.
