The book is a study of the phenomenon present in European culture for two thousand years and constantly evolving, although based on an incorrect assumption that ancient Egyptians acquired knowledge inaccessible to others and jealously guarded, which gave rise to speculations and legends. Erik Hornung, a German Egyptologist, demonstrated how profoundly Egyptian esotericism influenced the history of European mentality. Not only alchemy, astrology or other secret sciences, but also Rosicrucians, Freemasons and Theosophists derived from it.
