The Correspondence of Jan Długosz. Epistulae a Ioanne Dlugossio scriptae et receptae
The presented volume contains the first full edition of the correspondence of Jan Długosz (d. 1480), the most eminent historian of late medieval Poland. The publication comprises 43 letters: 37 written by Długosz and 6 addressed to him. Of these, 13 letters are known from the originals (2 are Długosz’s original manuscripts), 26 from their copies (mainly the 15th century), 4 from the 19th century editions. In the case of two letters it is their first edition, the third one has been published for the first time since the 17th century.
Although most of the correspondence was published in print in the 19th century, those editions contain many errors and inaccuracies, do not have annotations and, therefore, do not meet the requirements set for source editions today. The current publication is the long-awaited, new, critical edition of Długosz's correspondence. Every letter written in Latin is accompanied by a critical apparatus. Numerous corrections have been made to the readings in relation to the 19th century editions of the text, the identification of quotation sources and textual convergences has also been given. All letters are accompanied by the necessary annotations.
The volume also contains the complete Polish translations of the whole Długosz’s correspondence, what is more, a significant part of the letters was translated into Polish for the first time. The publication is preceded by an introduction presenting its objectives and scope, the life and works of Długosz, the characteristics of his correspondence, the description of the manuscript base and the rules used in the edition. It also contains an index of names and places. The book is accompanied by a box containing high-quality photographs of the original letters and their earliest copies.
Keywords: Jan Długosz, Zbigniew Oleśnicki, correspondence, critical edition, late Middle Ages, manuscripts, sources.
