Witold Pruszkowski’s 'Tsar'. Edition – Reconstruction – Commentary
Witold Pruszkowski’s 'Tsar', a poem written in 1883, addresses the problem of tsarist despotism. The work draws from two literary movements: it is deeply embedded both in the Romantic and Young Poland aesthetics. Pruszkowski used poetic imaging methods and integrated various forms of creative expression. This syncretic work can therefore be considered a harbinger of modernist trends – expressionism or symbolism. For the first time, the publication makes the poem available with an extensive commentary and restores this forgotten text to contemporary readers.
Keywords: Witold Pruszkowski, Juliusz Słowacki, Romanticism, Young Poland, source edition.
