Can You See the Partitions? The Geography of the Voter Turnout and Invalid Votes in Polish National Elections in 2004–2019
The publication analyses spatial differences in electoral civic activity indicated by the voter turnout and the percentage of invalid votes. The work uses data for all central elections in 2004–2019 at the municipal level. The text is complemented by maps prepared using the cartogram method, which show the level of voter turnout and the percentage of invalid votes, as well as the spatial classification of municipalities according to electoral behaviour.
The author analyses the multiple linear regression in order to find the most important determinants for the studied phenomena, taking into account social, economic, historical and cultural factors. The conclusions drawn from these analyses appear to be significantly different from the assumed hypotheses, which is not only the consequence of changes that have occurred in Polish electoral geography in the last twenty years, but also the result of using methods and data which have not been used in this scientific subdiscipline.
Keywords: electoral geography, voter turnout, percentage of invalid votes, elections, political geography.
