Księga maszyn przedstawia fantazję literacką dotyczącą rozszerzenia teorii ewolucji o materię nieorganiczną – nasycenia kosmosu pierwiastkiem immanentnej woli. Butler wysuwa hipotezę, że już współczesne mu maszyny mogą być świadome, a na skutek ich niepohamowanego rozwoju ostatecznie staną się dominującym gatunkiem na Ziemi. Z początku stworzona jako polemika z myślicielami swojej epoki, Księga maszyn z czasem zdobyła status propozycji ontologicznej, o tyle dzisiaj dla nas ważnej, że intuicje Butlera pokrywają się z późniejszymi i dotąd aktualnymi rozważaniami świata nauki. Dzieło wiktoriańskiego enfant terrible to ekscentryczny labirynt, przebrnięcie przez który sprawi radość także współczesnemu czytelnikowi.

Translated into Polish, edited and with a foreword by Adam Skowroński The Book of the Machines presents a literary fantasy extending the theory of evolution to include inorganic matter – envisioning a cosmos permeated with an element of immanent will. The text proposes the hypothesis that machines may already be conscious and that, through their unchecked progress, they will eventually become the dominant species on Earth. Initially conceived as a polemic against the thinkers of its time, The Book of the Machines would subsequently attain the status of an ontological proposition – one that remains significant today, as Butler’s intuitions align with later and still relevant scientific reflections. This work of the Victorian enfant terrible is an eccentric labyrinth whose traversal will bring joy even to the modern reader.
