Korespondencja Jana Dantyszka (łac. Ioannes Dantiscus, 1485-1548), urodzonego w Gdańsku, pochodzącego zaś z osiadłej od kilku pokoleń w Prusach dolnoniemieckiej rodziny von Höfen, sekretarza królewskiego i dyplomaty w służbie Zygmunta I i Bony Sforzy, a następnie biskupa chełmińskiego oraz warmińskiego, wybitnego poety nowołacińskiego i członka europejskiej respublica litteraria, należy do najobszerniejszych zbiorów tego rodzaju, jakie zachowały się z epoki wczesnonowożytnej. Wśród kilkuset korespondentów Dantyszka – władców i mężów stanu, dyplomatów, kupców i bankierów, uczonych i ludzi pióra – były postaci tak wybitne i słynne jak Erazm z Rotterdamu, Hernán Cortés czy Mikołaj Kopernik.

Niniejsza książka stanowi kolejny tom drukowanej serii Corpus Epistularum Ioannis Dantisci, przygotowywanej w ramach wieloletniego projektu „Rejestracja i publikacja korespondencji Jana Dantyszka (1485-1548)”, obejmującego również internetową edycję całej jego spuścizny piśmienniczej.

Książka zawiera krytyczną, komentowaną edycję łacińskojęzycznej korespondencji Jana Dantyszka i Alfonso de Valdésa, hiszpańskiego humanisty, przyjaciela Erazma z Roterdamu, sekretarza Karola V. Opublikowano w niej także korepondencję Dantyszka z bratem Alfonsa, Juanem, a także Wielkim Kanclerzem cesarza Karola – Mercurinem Gattinarą.

The correspondence of Ioannes Dantiscus (1485-1548), coming from a burgher family in Gdańsk royal scribe and diplomat in the service of Sigismund I Jagiellon and Bona Sforza, Bishop of Kulm (Chełmno) and of Ermland (Warmia), Neo-Latin poet and member of the European respublica litteraria, is one of the largest early modern collections of this kind preserved until the present day. Among more than 650 Dantiscus’ correspondents – rulers, statesmen, diplomats, merchants, bankers, scholars and men of letters – there are such famous and outstanding personalities like Erasmus of Rotterdam, Hernán Cortés or Nicolaus Copernicus.

The present book is a subsequent volume of the printed series Corpus Epistularum Ioannis Dantisci, which is a part of a multi-year project „Registration and Publication of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Correspondence”, including also an on-line edition of his correspondence and other texts.

The volume contains the correspondence (1526-1532) of Ioannes Dantiscus and Alfonso de Valdés, secretary of Emperor Charles V of Habsburg, Spanish humanist, friend of Erasmus of Rotterdam and a close friend of Dantiscus during his missions at the court of Charles V of Habsburg. In addition, the book presents Dantiscus’ correspondence with Juan de Valdés, Alfonso’s brother, and with Mercurino Arborio di Gattinara, Grand Chancellor of Emperor Charles V.
